~ Joining January Into February ~ / Wednesday, January 31, 2007
So it seems like everybody has settled well into school.

Jolly well done!
My body's aching with a bag again (like the new bag though).
My body clock is unadjusted.
And I seem to need a lot of sleep.

Great.

Let's see how well we go later this year.

Dot Points.
1. Went to Bus stops.
2. Went to school.
3. Went to Class to read Brave new World.
4. Went to Maths to read Brave new World.
5. Went to Recess @ Senior Study to read Brave new World.
6. Stayed @ Senior Study during free to read Brave new World.
7. Went to Physics and fazed out at my class's slowness at grasping relativity.
8. Went to Basketball and acted like a dumb ass (did i say act?) Can't believe how shit I am. Apart from dribbling...I've got nothing to differentiate me from 13C's (My YEAR 7 team!)

Oh yeah, need to vent out my rage at the Year 10's being seniors. IF THEY DARE COME INTO MY SENIOR STUDY, I"M GOING TO RIP THEM TO PIECES!!

And another thing, the year 7's are so cute. They keep asking me for directions.
Year 7:"Umm...could you please tell me how to get to room 203?"
Me: "Yeah...See that door right at the end there? That's the English Staffroom."

At this point I felt like telling them, "Go in there and ask them XD"
But of course, being that nice senior year 12 that I am, I told them, "The room RIGHT next to the English Staffroom is room 203"

And off they went, happy to know their way around the school. A school they'll be familiar with for the next 6 years...

Fuck. It's happening already. I already feel sad at the prospect of leaving the school, and the year just started too. T_____T

PS: Blog, my timetable is screwed. Morning class tomorrow. GG-ed.
PPS: I uninstalled my msn messenger.

~ Joining Friends with Beaches ~ / Thursday, January 25, 2007
I FINALLY WENT OUT!!!
w00t!!

(If you want photos, go to my album on the side and steal w/e u want)
lol, I crammed so many friends into one day though...
Arranged with Amanda mui to meet up with me and the group for the beach since I had other stuff to do afterwards and probably wont' have time to hang out with her until heaps ages. Was pretty good, cept kinda stuck with her for most of beach time. (which wasn't too bad)

Although I must say, the group looked fantastic today. So smexingly hotz!
When I say group I mean all you girls! *grins*
(Although I must say, Ray was quite teh sex regardless...6-packs of steel, thin hips, and tanned...mmhmm....K__, _o_'_e s_ l_c_y...) Note: Gman and Alfie are just as sxc...

Oh yeah...need to post up all the embarrassing moments that make the group that much more fun.

(I'd also like to add that the video ended merely because Raymond started charging at me)

We did..um...barely any swimming...i think...people just went everywhere (I know I did)
We played cards though!! Lol..frikken crazy clouds though..
(Can't believe I got sunburnt though...now my face looks like fried chocolate with slits for eyes.)

And this is especially for Geoff. You owe me bro!

Took Amanda back to ct where she went to meet "another" person. =P. Whereas for me, went Market Ct and met up with Jenny and Paul @ Galaxy World. Played for a while then left to go back to Hurst.

Drove my sister to jap tutoring while I went to the gym downstairs.
Drove my sister back home then had a frenzied-table tennis match with Dennis and Michael at my place.

Then we all watched stupid Federer beat Roddick. I swear, its not fun anymore watching Federer play. Gonzales better beat Haas and stick it up to Federer.

The guys left at about 10-ish. So I decided to hit the garage and start doing homework *rolls eyes*

[Shoutout to Amanda Mui: See you in 3 terms lil sis!! Be nice to Kelvin COZ HE HAS THE MOST AWESOME HAIRSTYLE EVER!! Oh, and also because he'll probably win most of the arguments anyway...try earn yourself some brownie points by being nice =P ]
---
today went out to fox studios with Rain to watch "Epic Movie"
It was shit.
Tried too hard to be funny and failed.

Except the Johnny Depp Part was really well done.
The Willy Wonka was okay too...

And Kumar [Edward] makes a good actor.
The White Bitch: Bow before the Queen!
Edward (or Kumar): Holy Shit! Stiffler's Mum!
The White Bitch: Edward, you can be KING of...WHITE CASTLE!
Edward (or Kumar): Hmm..white castle...feels like I've been there before...
The only other remotely funny bit was when they deliberately showed you the lion's stunt double. Ie. THE MARTIAL ARTS ASIAN!! Haha, now that was cool.

But that movie totally destroyed my love for Hermione though...T____T

~ Joining critisism with harem + Victoria's Secret~ / Sunday, January 21, 2007

Firstly, I need to thank Moshi (although indirectly) for introducing me to watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu. I feel that a good anime was what I need these holidays (thank god...I almost died re-watching the entire Dragonball series...)

I've come across a couple of these opinions in the past, and as such, have decided to conform and write one of my own.

(Honestly, for those who havn't heard about the show, or watched it...I highly recommend!)

After watching this anime, I decided to reflect upon the status of anime of these days. Especially within the genre of the 'harem' lead.

A friend once told me:
The male lead (harem lead) must be identifiable to the target audience. This is the whole point of using wimps isn’t it? That the harem lead is supposed to embody the Everyman. The problem is that they go to extremes and make the Everyman into Ikari Shinji and that is where harem shows often fall down.

The male lead must take the initiative now and then. If the whole point of the show is to pander to people with no lives, no spine and an active fantasy world, having the girls always being the movers and shakers probably just adds to the sense of helplessness. Sure it might be what some of them want but as Densha Otoko has shown, there is a market for the shy otaku working actively to get the girl.

2) The male lead must give us a reason to cheer for him.
Some may be blessed wit and some may be Kyon-sama but at the very least the harem lead has to be likable. An old example is Maison Ikkoku’s Godai Yuusaku (and his salaryman counterpart from Yume de Aetera). He knows the girl he wants, he pulls up his socks and tries to woo her to the best of his ability. The fact that Kyoko is the wishy-washy one just adds to our ability to empathize with him. Another is Manaka Junpei from the Ichigo 100% manga, while having a spine made of super-slinky at least has a dream that he’s shooting for and actively working for. The fact that each of the girls appeals to him in a different way and that they are largely part of the same ‘circle’ makes it more realistic that he really can’t choose one easily.

Since they started working towards the lowest common denominator (is male, horny, still breathing) harem leads have degraded quite a fair bit. Ranma doesn’t *want* a harem, he wants a cure. Morisato Keiichi has his problems but ultimately he’s a nice guy, a decent student and passionate about his hobbies. That’s an Everyman that we can cheer for without feeling guilty. Mahoraba’s Shiratori is also such a case. We always knew he wants Kozue-chan and while also having Slinky Spine Syndrome, he is surprisingly firm on this (as well as other things, Ousama Gamu anyone?). He comes across as a genuinely nice guy rather than a fellow with no guts that gets pushed around all the time.

-End of Gary's email to me regarding the boring holidays we both suffered and the remedies in essay writing we should send to each other regarding common grounds (ie. anime)

---

Personally, I feel “less is more” is definitely a guiding principle for harem leads. I was much happier with Ai Yori Aoshi when it was just a romantic story than I was when it was a harem show. Zero no Tsukaima is a bit closer to a “standard” harem, but it keeps it down to a dull roar, with only two realistic options. (Also qualifies excellently as a show where the male lead gets it together, for all of its other failings.)

Look at the basic concept of a harem show. “Look at this male character… he is utterly unremarkable, just like you, the horny viewer. But he can be surrounded by cute girls who are attracted to him, for no reason other than his ability to be minimally nice and polite. YOU can be minimally nice and polite too!” It’s kind of a lowest common denominator of harem show fan - you don’t have to have any kind of special qualities to imagine yourself in this character’s position.

But isn’t that insulting to the viewer? I mean, NOBODY thinks of themselves as that pathetic. Even the loneliest guys, on the inside, have some pride in themselves. So the key is to find a way to differentiate your character from “hopeless idiot” in a way that doesn’t alienate the viewer. You can’t make him punch through brick walls, because your viewer can’t do that, and if your harem lead can, you suddenly have an action show with lots of romantic interests and not a harem show at all. But there are traits that the harem lead can have which make him more likeable than a total loser, yet don’t cause the viewer to say “well, so much for me being like him!”

Nobody wants to imagine themselves as a passive participant in their own story… which is why the appeal of a harem lead is greatly increased when he “gets it together” and takes the reins of his own story. Even LH headed there, though not in the anime; Keitaro the excavator was a much more appealing character than Keitaro the human punching bag. Furthermore, the ability to “get it together” is a trait that people like to think they possess themselves, which enhances the ability to empathize with the character’s position. “I could get it together too” is the key message. It’s a way to distinguish the lead from a hapless blob, in a way that doesn’t alienate the viewer.

This is why wit is such an effective addition to the arsenal of the harem lead. It’s another quality that people almost universally fancy that they have, even if they in fact don’t. Nobody thinks they aren’t funny! And yet, the addition of wit doesn’t make the harem situation more complicated; you don’t have to be special so long as you can wisecrack a little about the situation. Take Kyon here. In many ways, he’s more passive than even Keitaro - he goes along with the flow, with only token protest, and doesn’t actually DO much throughout the series… saving that one scene, naturally. ;p But the viewer is extremely able to empathize with Kyon, because we have access to his internal monologues, and they turn him from a totally passive character into a dynamic one.

(It doesn’t hurt that being a little bit mean actually lines up quite well with observational experience, which is to say that the nice guy rarely gets the girl in real life…)

I’ll give Shirou a pass, mainly because Fate/Stay is an amalgam of a bunch of different stories and his character turns into a lowest-common-denominator because the mashed-up plot won’t work if he’s not. Same with Shiki in Tsukihime. Man, Type-Moon… ah well, the translation patch for the Tsukihime game was just completed, so perhaps I’ll try it out, see if he’s differentiated sufficiently on the various story paths.

Another example of show-gone-wrong is Maburaho. Main character is so passive that it kills the show (and the women too over-aggressive to be attractive, frankly.)

What about the polar opposite? Sousuke from FMP is not a harem lead, despite being surrounded by a few cute girls. Why not? The viewer can’t identify with him. He is, on the one hand, skilled in many ways the viewer is not (and his character relies on those skills; Sousuke without his military training is a very different character, whereas taking Shirou’s magic from him would leave him basically the same.) On the other hand, the viewer is radically superior to him in social abilities. It’s excellent from terms of a comedy, because it sets up the “oh look, Sousuke did something dumb again!” situation, but it kills the harem element. Nobody watches FMP because the cute girls are attracted to Sousuke!

Hopefully we’ll see less and less of the harem show. Haruhi is a very good example of this - you have a show with a “harem lead” and cute girls, but very little of what goes on can be classed as “harem hijinks”. The show goes where it’s going to go regardless, and if occasionally Kyon has a cute moment with someone, the payoff is much greater for the relatively subtle way the show goes about it.

I need a life....T____T

[Edit]

Maybe Life is worth living. Victoria's Secret was on...mmhmm..
The girls...*dies*

Honestly though, it scared me. After watching Victoria's Secret so many times, I shocked myself when I found myself tutting at some of the girl's lingerie. Instead of checking them out (as any normal healthy guy should), I was critiquing on their actual lingerie...

Scary huh?

AND OMG!!
JT!!!!! NEED I SAY MORE?!
This is perfect. Good thing I taped it. I hated how in his mv's his dances are always chopped by transitions! At least now I can learn "My Love" properly! I know what I'm doing this week! (Btw, he's so frikk'n hot, he was the 2nd person I drooled over tonight...)

I think I also have a thing for brunettes....so spicy!

~ Joining my heart's griefs ~ / Thursday, January 11, 2007
"What's in a name..." a famous playwright once wrote.
"..." I add. Your career was startling, remarkable yet highly un-noticed. My days of boredom still continue, as I delve into the denizens of physics and chemistry, embarking on a higher personal journey of self-discovery, integrating with my fellow conics and humble mechanics. The regions of the acidic environment remain untouched, for my lacking ability to learn quicker than a snail climbing Mount Everest continue to strain my resolve to learn.

Alas, time flies and the world continues. The time you worked was measured not in days but in sweat, tears and endless headaches. Not in things done but in things yet to do. If it wasn't for one speech I might have gone astray, insane, maybe dead?

You still should strive for what you believe in. Do what you please. Please what you do.
You may think to ask me, "Are you alright? "
To which I will reply, "I am quite sure he is."

Is my mind screwed? Am I mistaken? Have you been gone? Or was it I that was gone? Such questions floated across my mind, and I have taken the challenge to ponder the possibilites of these questions. Has something gone askew? What is this, for lack of terms, faggotry of a post?

So be happy. Be nice to everyone you know. Embrace the love they pour out to you upon your return to the messenger service network. And return it. Well, its a slow process, healing. I pity you. You are going to start a computer ban, which will totally neglect you as a result. But no fears, little one, you will not be deserted so fast. Perhaps in April or June. Your owner has not decided. But rest assured, now is not the time. You will be restored after the HSC. To you it might seem strange that I'm typing such an entry to you, in such a happy layout. In fact, this entry seems to belong to your brother, the private blog. In fact, you're longer than the ones I write there I would think. Or maybe, maybe...this is a suicide note left by me to the world to interpret. Maybe. Or maybe I'm too chicken to do it and can only imagine suicide as a venture of escape.

Escape. Such a pivotal word.
Words. Such a meaningless facade of interpretations.
Interpretations. Such a large discrimination based on perspective.
Perspectives. Such an incompetent phrase for something so much greater than what it does.

Who knows...but one thing is still ascertained: You have changed. The past is the past. The present is in the present. The future is...well, the future. Who knows what your future holds? Can you still be the doctor you hoped to be? Or can you get into that co-op program you so dearly wanted? Does that combined law/commerce sound inviting to you? Does it? At the moment, you'd think otherwise. Why of course, you have but 8 to 9 months to decide who you'll be. Then can you differentiate between what you are then and what you want to do now. Hopefully, your absence from the world (wide web) will widen your horizons to where you stand now with your studies, your family and to your friends. One may wish for no more, and no less. You have been missed, little me.

Unlike me. As Mcdull once said,
"My Mother lies in the past.
My Father lies in the future.
Leaving me...

デスノート-
What am I talking about?
Of course!
Death Note (死亡筆記)

Man, this movie is so wicked!
I read the manga like...last year I think. Gave up at about volume 6/7-ish because there's too much speech and not much action.

But that's only because waiting weekly for one chapter of manga is lousy anyway.

Anyway, this movie is extremely good and I recommend it to anyone who loves a crime fiction. There are Death Gods in there!

Light Yagami is a brilliant, but bored, high school student who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. The Death Note's instructions claim that, if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit the Death Note is real. After meeting with the true owner of the Death Note, a Shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the new world" by passing his judgement on criminals.

Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira"(derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "Killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a race to prove mental superiority between the two begins.

~ Joining New Year's Celebrations ~ / Wednesday, January 3, 2007
I guess it's inevitable that I post about this as well...after the hostesses' (Yi and Bon: these two peepz are just awesome)

Wait. Before I get too ahead of myself, I should concrete my thoughts and explain to you out there what happened with who. But considering how most of you WERE at the party, I'm in a position pondering if I should elaborate on the details of that night, or keep it brief. Having said that, I find myself in another position wondering if I should take a biased view of things or post a go-happy attitude post that exudes 'happy vibes'.

Okay okay, enough about the spam.
Here's how I passed the 31st of December 2006. (NB. Approximation only.)

7am: Woke up.

7:10am-8:10am: Went to the garage and started doing chemistry. (For those interested, it was the acidic environment)

8:30-9:30am: Did Maths (Mini 3U HSC 29)

9:45am-10:30am: Went to Macca's with Family and ate Brekky there. They gave us four free hash browns, such nice people =D

10:45-11:30am: Umm...went to Church in the ct. Religious, I am =D

12-1:30pm: Went to Fish market and had a very seafoody lunch. Also got tricked by my dad into drinking alcohol. (Sidenote: Parents had let me borrow the car to the NYE's party, but Dad wasn't keen on the idea. So he fooled me by giving me 'sparkling water', which in the end, resulted in 2.5 standard drinks.)

1:45pm: Saw Ian, Richie, Rano, Alex, Jamie..um...and the other guys. They went to watch movie or something.

1:45-3:20: I ended up shopping at Hay Market =D Very good fun. Bought myself a lego calendar sort've thing. Very fun to build =D (What's with guys and constructing aircraft/car models/or anything lego-based?)

3:38-4:??: Caught train with Ray. We had a very yummy conversation about something. Kris was with Andrew (duh), Gman was with Carmen (on some other carriage, duh), Alfred was on some other carriage (don't know why)

4:??:4:??: Waited for Terry and Matt and everybody else waited for us. Then we went to Bon's place!

4:30-ish: Bon gave us ground rules about her place which my mind processed as follows:
"Ooh, Chinese tv..Welcome to my place! Blah..blah blah...blah eat blaargh blah...blah those...blah..sleeping..blargh....don't...dirty...my place..blah.....Gosh, all the girls look so pretty...ooh, the tennis looks so pretty"

4:45-5:15: We played a very smashing round of popping the balloons and eating the squashed chocolate inside. Oh, and doing the dares inside, some of them weren't very daring at all. What sort of dare is 'doing push-ups' anyway.
Highlight here: Tina talking to a chair about Mt's impotency.

5:15-5:30: Suck'n'blow. Kinda like Super Trio gameshow game. Basically, there's a sheet of paper. One person has to suck onto the paper like a leech and pass it to the next person, who has to suck it off you using their mouth only.
Highlight: Kris passing it to Ray and "accidentally" dropping the piece of paper to kiss Ray on the lips =D. Heck, who I am kidding? The highlight was ME TAKING THE VIDEO of Kris kissing Ray. XD

5:30-5:45: Pass the orange with neck only. In this game, there were two groups of whatever. You have to pass the orange around your group and first group to do so wins. Bon's group won based on the fact Yi er...was handicapped.
Highlight: The joy of watching Andrew getting revenge for what Kris did by continuously try to 'take the orange from yi'. Two words: Alot of Body contact.

5:45-5:55: We played Taboo. We lost. Not very fun. My fault.
Highlights: No highlights at all. I suck. >.< (Uploaded by Bon)

6:??-7:??: We played Twister. Mhm...I gotta love Mt for this. He makes the best moves. Um...the girl's playing was...interesting. *looks away* Ray did his crazy thing where he just hogs everybody's spot with his super lanky body.

7:30-12- A heck of a lot of Mahjong. Me+Carmen+Yi+Bon+Rice Drinks+Bon's Mum= MAHJONG CLUB!! I LOVE YOU ASIANS!!! The other asians played blackjack and poker. Black jack involved a 'no toilet rule'. Some ppl like Amy, TIna and Ray left. =( OH OH! BON"S MUM MAKES THE BEST MANGO PUDDING!! RAWR!
Highlight: The phrase 'River flows in you' became popular in the blackjack game.

12am: COUNTDOWN!! Alot of party popper-thingos!

12:15-12:35am: SParklers outside Bon's house. Very funny~ Very fun.
Highlight: Watching the stupid people touch the hot sticks after they burn out. Oh, and also the infinite matches spent lighting them.

12:45-5am: The people played Poker here. Don't know what happened. Was dozing and watching MTV. Apparently, Bonnie won. And that she's "n00b"Watched Final Destination 2 and a bit of DOA. FD 2 was good. (Carmen was lost, kept asking Geoff what happened. Yi and Matt were scared like chicken shits. Mt scared them into Chicken shits. =D. Andrew was asleep "No I wasn't!" Terry slept on the couch. Bon laid in the fetal position right in the middle of the room. "I'm cold...*sniffles* *walks out and comes back in with more clothes on. Sleeps in the middle of the room again*" Alfie scaring Yi as well. DOA was shit. The only guys who would ever really want to watch it are those nerds who'll end up living the 4o yr old virgin life. Time was distorted here...never really understood what happened coz it was like a blur.

5:30-6am: (See, told you time was like a blur. It was like.."whoa dude, its 3:20..", "shutup fool, its 4" ) SUNRISE!! IT WAS AN AWESOME THING! THe sky was like...all pink-ish. Then turned orange. THE CLOUDS! OMG! THE CLOUDS! I LURVE CLOUDS!!

6-8:30am: Everybody just died here. Just fell asleep. Except for Yi and kris. Those freaks. Umm..they painted on Matt's nails, Terry's nails, Almost got me except not. I slept on Bon's couch near the mahjong table in the end. Mt on Matt. Alfred on the couch. Terry on the sofa. Geoff with Carmen on the bed initially, then not. Carmen ended up stealing my spot while I zombied somewhere. Bon stole their spot on the bed.

9:10: Terry starts running and tells me he's leaving. So me and Alfred had 2 min to pack shit up and leave with him coz the train leaves at 9:15. Chris was cool enough to give us a lift to Narwee station but didn't matter. We still missed the train. Bloody Terry...

10:30am-8:30pm: Slept like a log.
